The pallet acts as a unit load base . It enables the stocking, handing and transport of the unit load. The pallet facilitates handling by a variety of material handling equipment.
The pallet assures the efficiency of the entire supply chain. its role is important because it is present from start to finish.
The palletisation allows:
- more efficient handling;
- protection of the unit load;
- improved stability.
Various techniques to help stabilize unit loads include:
- stretch wrap;
- shrink wrap;
- banding;
- netting;
- carton glue;
- corner boards.
(pallet wrap and strap can be expendable, or less frequently, reusable)
(Stabilization can also be enhanced in some cases by increasing the stiffness of the pallet deck, the use of interlocking pallet patterns or the use of pallet collars.).
Pallet are constructed from a number of materials, primarily:
- wood;
- en métal;
- metal (steel and aluminum);
- plastic;
- corrugated fibreboard.
There are different types of pallets such as 4 way entry and 2 way entry, and various styles such as stringer and block pallets.
Certain pallets are built to make a single trip. These are called expendable or "single trip" pallets. Many of these can be reused, however, if they remain in good condition.
